Personal Heating Unit Component Assembly

Aspen Thermal has developed for the U.S. Army a Personal Heating System to provide auxiliary heat to individuals in cold environments. The system contains a miniature combustor that burns propane gas to heat a circulating antifreeze solution. The propane is provided in a disposable cartridge that can produce 250 W for four hours. A rechargeable battery provides more than eight hours of power to the circulating pump and digital electronic control system.

The control system maintains the circulating fluid at the user-selected set point by regulating the fuel pressure delivered to the combustor. The heated antifreeze solution is circulated through a tube-lined garment worn close to the skin by the user. An electronic ignitor provides a completely automated system.

Personal Heating Unit

Aspen Thermal’s Personal Heating System can be worn on a belt outside the jacket of the user. It weighs less than five pounds including the battery and a full fuel cartridge. The size of the unit is approximately 6.5 inches high by 7.0 inches long by 2.4 inches deep. It is connected to the users garment via a short insulated umbilical with a dripless twin connector, as shown in the figure below.
